K-Media Studio · About
Journalist.
Strategist.
Working artist.
I'm Karen Lloyd, the designer, writer, and strategist behind K-Media. I started in newsrooms, not marketing agencies, and that instinct to pay close attention shapes everything I build.
The Story
I didn't start in marketing.
I started in newsrooms.
In my early twenties I was chasing deadlines, covering local politics, interviewing business owners, and learning how to ask better questions. I studied journalism at Loyalist College in '99 and spent over a decade writing and photographing for community papers, travel publications, and lifestyle brands. What I didn't realize then was that journalism was quietly training me for digital strategy.
When social media began reshaping how businesses communicate, I saw something shifting. Traditional advertising was shrinking. Businesses suddenly had direct access to their audiences, but many didn't know what to say or how to structure their message online. That's where I found my footing.
My work sits at the intersection of journalism, design, and SEO, grounded in the belief that clarity builds confidence. A website isn't decoration. It's communication. I use keywords not as a technical afterthought, but as a listening tool. Search data shows us what people are actually looking for, how they describe their needs, and where opportunities are being missed.
Over the years I've helped restaurants, tourism operators, artists, authors, and small business owners across Canada. I've redesigned websites that weren't converting, rebuilt messy site structures so Google could actually understand them, and written hundreds of SEO-driven pieces that rank because they're built on intent, not guesswork.
I still approach every project the same way I approached my first newsroom assignment: pay attention, ask better questions, make it clear.

The Creative Side
Being an artist keeps the
strategy honest.
Outside of client work, I paint. Mostly at night, often in low light, and I wake up the next morning and adjust what I started in the dark. It's a process that mirrors how I build brands: layer, pause, refine.
Being both a strategist and a practicing artist keeps my work grounded. I understand what it feels like to create something personal and put it into the world. That perspective shapes how I work with arts clients. I'm not guessing at what the arts sector needs. I'm part of it.
I'm drawn to places with personality, and I build brands the same way. You'll find me working from Catapult Coffee between meetings, picking up soaps from The Blue Pelican, wandering local shops for colour inspiration, and running experiments with colour palettes on Adobe Color at odd hours.
